1. Love and Radio - "Understood as to Understand"
I've long been wary of Love and Radio's occasionally shocking subject matter.  It's not from the standpoint of taking the moral high ground, but because there are some aspects of the human condition that I'm simply not interested in learning more about.  "Understood as to Understand" may just be the closest to the line the show has gotten for me; in other words, it is fairly unknown territory that I find both interesting and helpful to hear about.  I don't even want to go into more detail, but  L+R did the public some good in spotlighting a person who is likely maligned by hoards on both end of the political and social spectrum.

2. Love and Radio - "La Retirada, Part One"
Utterly compelling from the first voice distorted interview, "La Retirada, Part One" investigates the secret and increasingly terrifying life of an ordinary woman who married into a crime family.  It seems like some red flags may have surfaced before any kind of point of no return, though I can't fathom how any person would be able to conceive of all that ended up unraveling.  Perhaps the most heart-wrenching thing thus far in the narrative are the moments when we hear from the estranged children.  The man at the center of this crazy tale remains shrouded in mystery, and I hope more is revealed in the rest of the series.

3. 99% Invisible - "Church (Sanctuary, Part 1)"
It's likely that the phrase "sanctuary cities" has passed through your ears in the past couple months if you've been even remotely plugged in to the news.  But if you're like me, those two words have little meaning apart from being a euphemism for 'trying to do the humane thing even if it isn't legal.'  Much to my surprise, this is not merely a politically charged topic d'jour but a manifestation of a long-standing tradition. Tucson, Arizona, the city where I was born, plays host to a majority of this episode's setting as 99 % Invisible details the origins of the sanctuary movement in America.  It's affirming to know that there are large groups of people organizing in an effort to act in the interest of humanity without regard for national borders.  Yet another multi-part series that I'll follow in eager anticipation of the next installment.
